A Human-Centered Approach ✨

Research

Collecting Qualitative and Quantitative Data

User-Research
Demographic Analysis
Mental health is a basic human need that needs to be researched more. Upon researching for this project, I was determined to find out why people may not seek mental health services.I conducted a SWOT(Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) Analysis and studied statistical data from past researches

Our Goals from the survey:
Understand how mental health services can be attained
Analyze areas in which mental health can be improved
Distinguish factors that may prevent people from seeking mental health
Observe data that may signify the need to have easier access to these counseling services
User-Research
SWOT Analysis
I wanted to explore the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats to find any insights and pain points needed to deliver a good experience for this users.
User-Research
Research Analysis
There are numerous stigmas about mental health.
We can't assume the following:

All mental health services readily available to the user
Everyone is aware of the idea of mental health
There are easy accessibility for mental health services

Resources can be overwhelming for users. There are already resources available to the public- how might I make my app facilitate a comfortable and encouraging experience for my users?
User-Research
Competitive Analysis
After finding different insights, I began to compare existing mental health apps to explore why users would gravitate one service over the other. It also allows me to see how different apps can make finding mental health services more comfortably.
User-Research
Empathy
To understand the logistical applications of the app, we used sticky notes to denote our insights and to find a pattern. It helped me understand the concerns/questions from the user’s perspective.
From this empathy map, I created How Might We Questions to focus certain areas that fits the user’s needs.

How Might We...
1. How might we encourage users to embrace seeking mental health services?
2. How might we combat mental health taboos and promote a comfortable environment for users?
3. How might we make mental health services accessible to everyone?
4. How might we provide guidance to users through a seemingly daunting process?

Define the problem
"How do we help guide the users to find the right mental health services?"

Ideate
Mind-Map
After conducting the SWOT analysis, and mental health research, I started off with the question,  “How do we help guide the users to find the right mental health services?” I started to brainstorm different things that are connected with this question.
Ideate
Application Map
We started to map out the different pages and where different interactions would occur. We started with simple pages leading to different sub interactions that would branch off. We focused on simplicity and logical interactions for a smooth user experience
Ideate
User-Task Flow
I planned out the user flow to see how the user would navigate through pages if the pages were created based on understanding where the hierarchy of information will be presented.

Wireframes & Prototypes

Bringing ideas to life

Low & High Fidelity Wireframes
We emphasized a smooth and simple user experience and designed mid-fidelity wireframes that the users would interact with through different pages.

We translated the Mid-Fidelity frames into color and incorporated more UI components on Figma to make the app appear more complete.
Testing
Usability Tests

Think Out Loud
After designing the High-Fidelity wireframes, we moderated how the users navigated through the page and were asked to describe their thoughts/concerns when interacting with the prototype over zoom.

Overview 📍
Method: Moderated Usability Testing (Think Aloud)
Participants: 5
Age Range: Young Adults (19-22)

Average Time: ~20 minutes
Task Completion Rate: 98%
Error-Free Rate: 85%
Testing
Painpoints 🔨
4/4 users experienced difficulties in navigating back because since it was missing the back button
2/4 users felt that the transaction history is invasive because it showed specific locations and money using third-party banking apps to track it
3/4 users did not understand the gray bar as an indicator for “cheat days”
Insights
Users need to have a more visible & clearer indication of a back button
Respect privacy and invasiveness
Include a more intuitive indication for “cheat days”
Recommendations
On Figma, use the swipe-down feature to indicate a “back” option in drop-down menus
Change the transaction UI to be something less revealing and specific
Instead of a gray bar, we should extend the end-date of the challenge instead
Revise
Priority Revisions

1. Change the auto-animate tutorial to a “tap to continue”
I found that the auto-animate was too quick for the user’s pace. The users were not able to understand how to navigate through the icons, so I wanted to include a “tap to continue” feature for the users to read at their own pace.
2. Reduce text clutter and increase text-spacing
The calendar page is a good example of how it was oversize in everything. I changed the interface of all the pages to make sure the users are able to read through everything without being too overwhelmed with the texts.

3. Make the interface feel more vibrant and saturated
Before, I realized that my pages felt washed out. I wanted to bring more life into the UI by increasing the saturation of the design.

Design System

Visual and Branding Design✨

Identity
Branding
Bloom is an app that encourages growth from the users. I want the users to feel like they are growing better, and I wanted to symbolize this growth as a lotus flower. A lotus flower is a flower that is able to grow beautifully in muddy waters. Perhaps this is the same as humans where we are able to bloom into beautiful beings despite our challenges and environments.
Identity
Mood Board
Simple jade, emerald, and pink accent colors are used in this app. They are colors of the lotus flower, and colors that can calm the users.
Identity
Logo
I intended this app to represent itself as a lotus flower. Once you tap the seed, you are opened to many possibilities to grow into a beautiful being. So, I focused on the lotus flower as my main logo design to represent the virtues of seeking mental health in an encouraging way.
Reflection
Next Steps
This app was challenging, yet rewarding. I was challenged to design a complicated, daunting process of finding mental health services into something that is more simple and encouraging. The research was vital towards this prototype. learned a lot about language usages and colors to convey a meditative experience for the users. I intended this prototype to be a safe place for users to seek mental health services. In doing so, I did not want to use overwhelming texts and colors. For the next step, I want to conduct more app usabilitytests to observe whether the app will have a positive and optimal experience. Along with that, I want to implement more useful features for the users to feel like they are on the right path.
