Mak Rui Cheng - Cody Mak

My parent's named me for symbolic purposes- to grow, to learn, to be confident within myself. That's my name!

I have a weird history actually. I was a pre-med student who could not memorize thousands of terms for tests. I was also a software engineer student who would run multiple if-else statements instead of for-loops. Now, I am a Product Designer who is proud of designing technology that can make the world a better place.

Fun fact, I had two open heart surgeries at six months old and at age seven. My perception of the world changed, and I decided to make it my mission to help people. My creativity is my superpower, so I want to help people through design!

Oh and yes-- I love my dog very much. His name is Rocky :)

The Odyssey of a Boy who can.

01

The Boy who can cook Frankenstein meals

After a long day at school or work, I always look forward to cooking. It makes me feel calm and composed after a chaotic day. What better to end the day than to enjoy a comforting meal? I love making  my Frankenstein fried rice where I would put everything from the fridge onto a wok and fry it up.

I would also send food pictures to my family!

02

The Boy who can play Video Games

It started with playing Paper Mario, The Thousand Year Door, to playing League of Legends, Valorant, and now Dead by Daylight. I met and felt the warmth from so many communities that gave me a sense of comfort.

Gaming was my haven until I ventured into the world of online multiplayer games, where it was hard to ignore the horrors of being verbally harassed by players. Ridiculed due to the lack of trust and safety initiatives in online spaces, I became determined to explore how social issues in technology and ethical design principles can influence safe digital environments to replicate meaningful interactions as they did for me.

03

The Boy who will make the world a safer place.

Trust and Safety in the digital world is often neglected. There is a lot of toxicity and online harassment toward marginalized communities and it becomes harder to maintain when technology keeps advancing. I plan to use my design skills to design tangible methods that can solve critical issues, like trust and safety, in digital ecosystems. I hope to welcome everyone in technology through designs and create communities, connections, and networks where positive interactions can thrive.
