Golf players learn better through audio courses.

How would that exist on the current Golf Guru app? Golf Guru is a small smart-up based in London, UK, that planned to launch their initial mobile app on the app store. This is where I came in to reimagine the Audio course learning experiences and ideated their rewards page.

So I designed Audio Courses, Rewards Page, and Feedback Entries

Golf Guru is an app boosting mental strength through audio training from founders in London, UK with the goals to expand this to Golf Players.

Timeline:

January 2022 - June 2022

Role:

Product Design Intern

Skills

Design Thinking Process, Interaction Design, Prototype, Agile Methodology

Overview:

I was the Product Design Intern and led the audio courses, rewards page, and feedback entries for Golf Guru's mobile pages.

I worked directly with two founders, 4 software engineers, 1 product manager, and 1 designer.

A New UI Change

From previous wireframes, Golf Guru went through an entire rebrand to kick off their first shipped version of the product.

Audio Courses & Layout

With an updated design made according to usability test feedback, users are now able to easily access and track the progress of their course sessions.

Rewards Page

The newly implemented rewards page briefly introduces users to its purpose while also providing an easy way to access and share their personal code and redeem their gifts.

DISCOVERY

I did a lot of competitive Analysis

Since my team and I unfamiliar with the the golf scene, I started with conducting competitive analysis to analyze concurrent apps that serve similar goals. We found 5 different apps that served similar goals as Golf Guru, but they all different strengths and weaknesses

DISCOVERY

Competitive Analysis

There were several competitors that we referenced, and wrote strengths and weaknesses based on the audio features we worked on.

Onboarding
Usually shows tutorial and personalizes audios based on pre-screening questions
Audio Features
Arranged in Modules and Easy Filters for different skill sets
Strength
Emphasis on trust, progress bars and reviews for accountability
Weakness
Lack of directions, user experience, and personalization

SYNTHESIS

The product team had so many questions.

There were so many questions at the start. My team and I, including developers and project manager, all wrote down HMW Questions to ensure that feasibility, concerns, and insights should be addressed in the design process.

SYNTHESIS

How Might We (HMW)...?

With a lot of data, we also had a lot of questions. We wrote it in a form of HMW’s and placed them in their respective categories.

DEFINE

Questions turned to Key Insights & Painpoints

DEFINE

Product Goals

After speaking with the stakeholder and their vision, we realized there are several product goals

Product Goal #1

Golf Players should have an easy access to the library collection of audio recordings

Product Goal #2

Golf Guru App should incentivize users to grow retention and adoption rates

Product Goal #3

Players should reinforce their learnings after listening to the audio courses.

Problem Statement

How do we reimagine Golf Guru's audio feature to provide an intuitive and motivational/personalized user experience, while also strengthening the user's mental game and sense of improvement?

IDEATE

I started to design based on the dev's back-end architecture.

IDEATE

Back-End Guidelines

The developers had created a general framework for how the pages would flow. From there, I designed what it would look like

IDEATE

Sketches

I contributed to reimagining the layout of the Audio page, as it was very unfinished and clunky. My client loved the idea of personalizing the audio pages to target specific strengths and weaknesses.

TEST

I tested several mid-fi wireframes

Due to time constraints, I needed to give the developers an initial structure to bring static designs into a functioning prototype fairly quickly.

TEST

A/B Test

We wanted to conduct A/B tests to test our preliminary high fidelity designs, and tested on design systems, layouts, and usability

Total Respondents: 58

FEEDBACK #1

Light Mode vs Dark Mode

Light: 21
Dark: 37

FEEDBACK #2

Original Layout vs Proposed Layout

Original Layout: 20
Proposed Layout: 38

FEEDBACK #3

Full Transparency vs Partial Transparency

Full Transparency: 14
Partial Transparency: 44

FINAL

This created version 1 of Golf Guru

Our Client originally had a non-functioning low-fidelity prototype. What changed was how there was a lot more empathy and research.

The new design includes a very distinguishable design system that is visually pleasing, and intuitive for users to learn and listen to audios on their own.

Clean and Green

With an updated design system and changes made according to usability test feedback, users are now able to easily access and track the progress of their course sessions.

Reinforced reflections

There are now individualized course reflections to be more personalized, where users have the freedom to skip, continue, and reflect after finishing their courses.

Rewarding Users

The newly implemented rewards page briefly introduces users to its purpose while also providing an easy way to access and share their personal code and redeem their gifts.

REFLECTION

Challenging Project that helped me grow a lot.

This 12-week project is CodeLab's Exclusive Industry Client Team, where only a small number of people is able to work with a real-life stakeholder and company. Through this, I learned a lot about how to apply design thinking into a business perspective- how do we generate revenue for this start up company?

Working with not only a designer, but in a team of Software Developers and Project Managers was an incredible learning experience for me. Together, we were able to communicate feasibility issues and individual progresses, replicating a real industry setting. Our stakeholder instructed us to create a Rewards Page with only a week of deadline.

For my next steps, I would like to spend more time conducting an adequate amount of usability test to validate the designs more. If given more time, I also would like to create a better onboarding process for the users to allow an easier understanding of the app.Overall, I am very proud of my contributions to the team, and how we all successfully communicated clearly at this industry project with Golf guru
